North Carolina’s disabled veterans may qualify for property tax relief. The tax relief program excludes up to the first $45,000 of the appraised value of the disabled veteran’s permanent residence. Unlike other tax relief programs, North Carolina set no income limit for this tax relief for veterans. A disabled veteran must have their character of service at separation listed as honorable or under honorable
conditions to qualify. Also, the disabled veteran must have a total and permanent service-connected disability or get benefits for specially adapted housing under 38 U.S.C. 2101 to qualify. Additionally, unlike the other property tax relief programs, this one has no age limitations.
Surviving spouses of these veterans also qualify, provided they have not remarried. Check out G.S. 105-277.1C for the full text of the statute about this aspect of the tax relief.
Deadline for Disabled Veterans’ Applications
Anyway, the deadline for the application is fast approaching. It’s less than one month away. All applications are due by June 1. These applications must be completed and submitted annually. Find more details about the Application for Property Tax Relief on our recent blog post.
